What You Need For An Appraisal
What You Need for a Jewelry Appraisal…
The following list we have suggested will be the Best Investment you will ever make in the field of Jewelry Identification and Appraisal.
Nothing here will cost more than a few dollars, but it could save you thousands. Find out How…
Start with the Basics.
The VERY first thing you need is this Jewelry Appraisal Center and everything in it….
We provide a HUGE amount of information both at the website and inside the Kit itself, plus the site is constantly changing and upgrading with new articles and statistics including original Victorian and Edwardian jewelry drawings from manufacturing catalogues of the period. Invaluable.
You would do well to bookmark the Online Jewelry Appraisal Center into your Favorites list, and you will find the link on the top of every page.
If you have previous documentation, that will certainly help.
The original store receipt or invoice from your jeweler, or even old Appraisal Certificates which are now out of date. They may all contain weights, quality and identification details about the Jewelry you wish to value.
You will need TWO PIECES OF INEXPENSIVE equipment.
An Eyeglass and a Ruler. We realize that you do not wish to become experts in the field of Gemology and Jewelry Valuation Appraisals, but just need a few Hints and Tips as to a BASIC understanding on Gold, Gems and Antiques.
If you need to understand How a Jewelry Appraisal is put together, we strongly recommend the Appraisal Home Study Course (which anyone can do) available from the top menu links.
The number ONE item - an Eyeglass.
No need for an expensive Jeweler’s Loupe which can cost hundred’s of dollars. A small plastic eyeglass will give you EXACTLY the same view as a professional item. They both have the same magnification. 10xtimes.
The Professional Gemologist usually needs a slightly Sharper image which is undistorted. For our needs though, a plastic 10x eyeglass is more than up to the task. They can be purchased cheaply and are widely available.
It is important to note, we do NOT mean a magnifying Glass like the one our Antique Detective uses.
A large magnifying glass like this one are not much good…. But if it helps, it’s better than nothing!
While we will become something of a Detective in the Antique department, we certainly do NOT want to become Sherlock Holmes. It wouldn’t look good at the local antique auction either!
Other items we suggest could be….
Shown above was a sample of the Authors personal Jewelry and Valuation tools used at home. You will see several inexpensive items which you may already have (especially in the Kitchen - Study or Workshop).
We also suggest….
- A small white plastic or china dish
- A Hole Gauge
- Child’s Magnet
- A tool for measuring in millimeters.
- An old toothbrush for cleaning
- A kitchen scale (This will be the most expensive item but you may already have one, so the cost will be negative)
- Toothpicks
- Some Blue Tack or Yellow Tack
We will be adding to this list as we continue….
Just get the 10x Plastic eyeglass first.
