Can you tell the difference between these Rolex Datona models?
Rolex made known its first chronograph models around 1937. In 1960, Rolex gave the chronograph line a major facelift with the introduction of the Cosmograph (model 6239), a Rolex trademarked term which is similar to the chronograph--the cosmetic difference being that the 'tachymeter scale' is printed (or engraved) on the bezel rather than on the outer rim of the dial.
The outrageous Rolex Cosmograph "Daytona" wristwatch traces back to the early months of 1961, when Rolex began erecting the Rolex Cosmograph. At the time, Rolex was a sponsor of the 24 Hours of Daytona race, and named its new chronograph watch after that well known race (seemed to make sense didn't it?). Because of their usefulness in calculating average lap speed, the watch's popularity took off in the motor racing community. This smart marketing maneuver would later become celebrated in marketing case study textbooks worldwide on how to successfully market a product.
Early models were introduced in 1961 using a Valjoux 72 manual-wind 3-register chronograph movement, the Cosmograph, Cosmograph Daytona and Oyster Cosmograph Daytona were produced continuously until 1988. Relatively unpopular, they were replaced by a bigger Daytona featuring self-winding movements, using a slightly modified version of Zenith's El Primero caliber, under the name Oyster Perpetual Cosmograph. In 2000 Rolex replaced the Zenith movement with a 3-register chronograph movement entirely of its own design, the Rolex 4130 caliber (model number: 116520). Thanks to its limited production and ever increasing popularity, the stainless steel Rolex Cosmograph Daytona is considered one of the rarer watches to own.

The Rolex Cosmograph Daytona is one of the most expensive watches marketed enough to be readily recognized by non-enthusiasts, and is often worn for this reason, The popular Daytona comes in several models, these can be established by the color of the watch face, the type of metal employed, and the type of strap, these include, white gold strap with white face; and stainless steel strap with black face amongst others.
It is fact that Paul Newman himself had worn the Daytona style of Rolex watch from the time he fell in love with automobile racing up until his death in 2008. Paul Newman was quoted as receiving a Daytona model from his wife in 1972. It was similar looking to some he had worn in movies and posters before but the 1972 watch was the real thing. Unlike money hungry athletes & celebrities, Paul Newman was not endorsed by Rolex, he just always had one because it fit his style.
The vintage Daytona models have a devout international following. It is the most chanted about and looked after timepiece. Ironically this was Hans Wilsdorf legacy to Rolex, most likely to become a complete bomb but, instead it became Rolex's biggest success. Even though this watch failed NASA's tough requirements for the moon it's success still has skyrocketed.

Jewelry hallmarks
Professional jewelry appraisals completed by gemologists and valuers often have to take into account the effect the jewelry hallmarks have on the value of each item being appraised. Do they alter the price, up or down, depending on the hallmark. The simple answer is yes – and no. It depends on the hallmarks themselves and where they come from.
I get similar questions on forums and ‘expert’ websites, together with my own members discussion group. They are usually in the following format, and in general the same questions get asked over and over again. They go… Continue reading Jewelry Hallmarks And What They Mean...
Platinum is regarded as a superior metal for fine jewelry and is used in many exquisite diamond engagement rings. It is 35 times more rare than gold and is naturally white. It is the strongest metal used in jewelry and is 90 to 95 percent pure. The high purity level makes it hypoallergenic and an idyllic choice for someone who has sensitive skin. Platinum is also almost twice as heavy as 14K gold which makes it very durable.
The reason Platinum is a desirable metal for making jewelry is because it is very malleable and can be formed without cracking… Continue reading Platinum Facts...
Most people when they imagine a pearl are picturing perfect large round spherical gems, creamy white in colour with a shimmery iridescent surface. The reality is that pearls are usually irregular in shape, each one is different and to find one that is completely round is almost unheard of, not to mention trying to make a whole necklace of pearls that are all more or less the same. Natural pearls are the rarest and most highly valued variety, but nowadays most pearl jewellery is made from cultured or farmed pearls, which are grown on pearl farms… Continue reading What are the Main Differences Between Freshwater and Saltwater Pearls?...
