How do I know what Watch to buy?

February 4th, 2010

When deciding to buy a watch you should first ask yourself 'what do I want a new watch for?'.Is it going to be for everyday use (assuming such use is not formal wear) or are you more likely to use it for specific kinds of sports such as running or jogging?

It should be noted that the fewer watches you buy, the more difficult it is to answer this question. If the watch you are buying is likely to be the only you will own it would be a very sensible idea to purchase a fairly plain sports watch.  The reason for this is that a heavy sports watch would look out of place with a suit and similarly, a mens designer watch with a fancy strap would look silly if you were wearing a tshirt and shorts.  As a rule of thumb, the watch styles you are most likely to encounter can be categorized as follows:

Dress watch - this style of watch is usually gold, plain and thin however these rules aren't set in stone. If the watch has a rotating bezel or a bezel that has markings on then it will not be a dress watch. The dial and hands are a bit less important, but avoid thick markings and hands with lots of tritium.

Designer watch - these watches can be difficult to categorize.Generally these will be makes of watches that have a worldwide reputation and a well publicized designer but this is not always the case.  Often the most prestigious mens and ladies designer watch brands are only available in authorized retailers however there are a number of online dealers.

Sports watch - these sorts of watches are usually large, often have bezels with prominent markings and are water resistant to some degree. They nearly always have thick, luminous hands and are mostly designed to be rugged.

When choosing your watch, ensure that you try it on first to make sure that it is comfortable as well as adjustable.  Also, don't forget to make sure that it is water resistant as it is critical that the watch is able to keep out everyday moisture.

Jewelry hallmarks

Professional jewelry appraisals completed by gemologists and valuers often have to take into account the effect the jewelry hallmarks have on the value of each item being appraised. Do they alter the price, up or down, depending on the hallmark. The simple answer is yes – and no. It depends on the hallmarks themselves and where they come from.

I get similar questions on forums and ‘expert’ websites, together with my own members discussion group. They are usually in the following format, and in general the same questions get asked over and over again. They go… Continue reading Jewelry Hallmarks And What They Mean...

Most people when they imagine a pearl are picturing perfect large round spherical gems, creamy white in colour with a shimmery iridescent surface. The reality is that pearls are usually irregular in shape, each one is different and to find one that is completely round is almost unheard of, not to mention trying to make a whole necklace of pearls that are all more or less the same. Natural pearls are the rarest and most highly valued variety, but nowadays most pearl jewellery is made from cultured or farmed pearls, which are grown on pearl farms… Continue reading What are the Main Differences Between Freshwater and Saltwater Pearls?...

Name jewelry is one of the trendiest types of fashion accessory for both men and women. A large part of this modern upswing in popularity is due to the hip hop culture where large name jewelry items have become the defining fashion in bling. While much of the current fashion is large, bling-style pieces, name jewelry can range from delicate and subtle to big and bold. But name jewelry is also very popular as traditional mothers jewelry. Name rings and name necklaces are by far the most popular items with online stores and retailers… Continue reading Name Jewelry Trends...
