They Laughed When I Said I Wanted To Value My Own Jewelry From Home….
…But You Should Have Seen Their Faces When I Showed Them My Certificate.

In fact it became one of the reasons the Valuation Self Appraisal Kit was developed in the first place.”
It was about my Stepmother.
She was getting annoyed and irritable. No-one knew what the problem was until she began to ask teasing little questions.
“Have you seen any jewelry lying around?” or “Not seen my Wedding Band, have you. The one I kept on the Bedroom drawers.”
It was her mother’s ring and had been handed down. Now it was gone.

Despite a thorough search, it never turned up. No-one could have taken it so it remains a mystery to this day.

My Father had the foresight to get an appraisal valuation done on all my stepmothers jewelry. Being methodical, he had also taken photos.
The Certificate listed every detail including the weight, age, gold quality (it was 22ct), width across the band, shape and style, even the rose gold color was mentioned in the description plus the engraving inside the band with the Hallmark date was listed on the document.
Inside a couple of weeks it was replaced. It could never be the same of course, but it was identical in every other detail.
Problem solved but it taught me a lesson I’ll never forget….

But resistance was still there. In the High Street or Shopping Malls the fee was too expensive. The typical rate THEY charge for a Valuation Appraisal is a Flat Base fee plus one percent of the final value. If an item was Appraised at $1000 dollars, the cost of the Certificate would be $20 + $10 = $30 total.
This was also calculated on a sliding scale - The dearer the valuation, the more it cost for the Certificate.
Sometimes hundreds of dollars, just for a few items.

Time passed and I eventually retired early (so I thought) only to get involved with a website specializing in Antique Jewelry and Gems.
