Three Jewelry Appraisal Choices:
This came in a few days ago and unfortunately it demonstrates a serious lack of knowledge when it comes to getting an appraisal done on jewelry.
The question is typical of several I receive through the week, both here at the Jewelry Appraisals Center, and also at About.com as one of their ‘Experts’.
I understand that people just want a “Rough Idea,” but as a Gemologist and Valuer, it would be wrong of me to give it, and I state my reasons below.
You may find the question and my subsequent answer, both informative and - to be blunt - truthful…
Here Is The Three Jewelry Appraisal Choices Question:
I am trying to find out what the value of my sister’s old engagement ring is. There is a card with the ring that describes it, and is as follows:
Shape/Cut: Pear Shape Brill Cut
Measurement: 6.82 x 4.75 x 3.38 mm
Weight: 0.70 Carat
Color: Near Colorless (I)
Clarity: SI(2)
Polish/Symmetry: Good / Good
Desc: One 14KT yellow gold mounting (ring), Weighing in total approx. 2.8 DWT., stamped “14K LID .70″ with logo, containing one natural diamond (set in 14KT white gold).
Thanks you for your time.
Here is my ANSWER:
G’day (Name removed for privacy) and many thanks for your query
You have all the information you need to get an up-to-date valuation appraisal.
You can either go to your local FRIENDLY jewelry who may NOT be a qualified Gemologist/Valuer and have them scribble a quick guesstimate on their letterhead - OR…
You can go to a fully qualified Appraiser and have them do a complete identification and written appraisal for which they will charge you a fair, but large sum - OR…
As you have all the information you need, why not Do-it-Yourself by filling in multiple choice questions right here at the Jewelry Appraisals Online Center. We charge a single flat fee and there’s a super discount if you purchase more than one appraisal Kit.
>>>> - Read the Information Letter Now…
As I mentioned in my ‘Ask The Appraiser’ Podcast on the Main page of the website - we are here to help you, but we can’t do the appraisal for you because we can’t see, feel, measure or touch the item in question - BUT YOU CAN as thousands have done before you. Getting a FREE Appraisal can never be a good option.
