So you have two choices.

Take it to your local jeweler and have them do a current Valuation Appraisal for you (good luck with that) as it's NOT cheap for a gemological report.

OR...

As I said - do it yourself with an ONLINE low cost Valuation by using our Jewelry Appraisals Online System. But remember it is YOU who are adding the information to the forms, so any resulting value is directly attributable to you - NOT the software (which is very accurate with the right answers).

You might also like to add this query to my blog at http://how2valuejewelry.com/ as other may have had a similar problem. Can't hurt anyway and who knows what answers you may get.

Hope this helps...

Jewelry hallmarks

Professional jewelry appraisals completed by gemologists and valuers often have to take into account the effect the jewelry hallmarks have on the value of each item being appraised. Do they alter the price, up or down, depending on the hallmark. The simple answer is yes – and no. It depends on the hallmarks themselves and where they come from.

I get similar questions on forums and ‘expert’ websites, together with my own members discussion group. They are usually in the following format, and in general the same questions get asked over and over again. They go… Continue reading Jewelry Hallmarks And What They Mean...

The Asscher cut diamond is unique that owes its name to Joseph Asscher the person that invented this particular stone way back in the year 1902. This diamond cut has as many as seventy-two facets and the diamond is shaped as a square though thanks to its parallel step facets as well as depth of corners it can be likened to an octagon as well. Sparkling Diamonds The true beauty of the Asscher cut diamond lays in the fact that such a cut helps make a diamond sparkle like no other diamond cut. Most people when they imagine a pearl are picturing perfect large round spherical gems, creamy white in colour with a shimmery iridescent surface. The reality is that pearls are usually irregular in shape, each one is different and to find one that is completely round is almost unheard of, not to mention trying to make a whole necklace of pearls that are all more or less the same. Natural pearls are the rarest and most highly valued variety, but nowadays most pearl jewellery is made from cultured or farmed pearls, which are grown on pearl farms… Continue reading What are the Main Differences Between Freshwater and Saltwater Pearls?...

What people are saying about this...

  1. Darren

There is no such thing as “green amethyst” Amethyst is available in various tones and saturations of purple. Green quartz is either green quartz or prasiolite.

Oh…and it is unethical to do your own appraisal. An insurance company will not accept it as there is a conflict of interest with determining the value of your own jewelry.

G’day Darren and many thanks for your comments on the above client question.

I know there is no such thing as a Green Amethyst – but I can’t prevent a client from asking the question.

    With regards the ‘Unethical’ appraisals.

Insurance companies (even on your car insurance) will calculate either an ‘Agreed Value’ or a Market Value. They don’t care really because the client pays the extra premium anyway. If both parties ‘AGREE’ on a price, the Insurance company will cover them for a premium.

Plus (often) a claim is made on jewelry AFTER the loss.

What do the insurance companies suggest? – They recommend the client goes to their local jeweler and have an estimated value written on a letterhead – even if the jeweler can’t see, feel, measure or test the item.

They look for something SIMILAR in the store window and base the price on that.

We recommend clients use an old outdated valuation certificate or original store receipt with all the details already written on it, and use our system to UPDATE at today’s value.

Surely it is better to have a correctly worded appraisal certificate printed with all the correct measurements and details.

The client cannot change the VALUE of the item because the software does the calculations (because that’s what it really is – a GIANT CALCULATOR) using the formulas and techniques as suggested by the world’s leading authority on gemstones and appraisals.

Just thought you might like to understand that’s what our service provides (in the thousands around the world in 7 languages too).

I shall print your comments together with this reply later today.

    Many thanks for your participation…
