The history behind the very romantic tradition of men presenting the women they love with engagement rings is a bit less appealing than what happens now. In reality the earliest forms of engagement rings were more practical rather than romantic and were largely a sign that the woman was considered to be owned or part of the man’s property. Â
Most historians agree that the first engagement rings to be routinely used by a particular culture came from the Romans. Roman men would provide a ring, usually of a type of steel, to a woman as a way to keep her heart pure. The reason the third finger of the left hand was used comes from the belief that a vein ran directly from the heart to the hand through this finger. The rings were meant to keep the woman betrothed or true to her partner to be.
The Middle Ages saw the continued use of engagement rings, although they started to look a bit more like modern engagement rings. Diamonds were still so rare as to be impossible to get, so other precious gems such as emeralds or rubies were used. Only the very wealthy were able to afford these rings, but they were highly prized.
Surprisingly history has preserved the name of the first man believed to have given a diamond engagement ring. The first engagement ring was for Mary of Burgundy from Archduke Maximillian of Hamburg and was presented to her in 1477. From that point on all the wealthiest of royalty wanted diamond engagement rings. The regular people also started giving engagement or betrothal rings, but they were more like the modern Irish claddagh ring, ornate but without diamonds.Â

Up to the late 18th and early 19th centuries there were definite diamond shortages, meaning few could afford these precious gems. When mines were found in South America and Africa, diamonds of all shapes and sizes became more popular and affordable and the modern engagement rings came into vogue.
Diamonds are some of the hardest gems, resistant to almost any type of damage. While the saying diamonds are forever was a marketing slogan, it is also one of the reasons they become so essential in engagement rings. Since there were many different qualities of diamonds on the market, the next step was to develop some type of grading for the stones.
Now consumers can buy diamond engagement rings with confidence since gems in the rings are certified. Certified diamonds have been full described in the document of certification, allowing the buyer to know every aspect of the diamond before purchase. Â
While the history of engagement rings may be more practical than romantic, they are now a true and lasting symbol of love and commitment. Buying engagement rings with certified diamonds helps to protect your investment and help you determine the ring that is just right.

Jewelry hallmarks
Professional jewelry appraisals completed by gemologists and valuers often have to take into account the effect the jewelry hallmarks have on the value of each item being appraised. Do they alter the price, up or down, depending on the hallmark. The simple answer is yes – and no. It depends on the hallmarks themselves and where they come from.

Most people when they imagine a pearl are picturing perfect large round spherical gems, creamy white in colour with a shimmery iridescent surface. The reality is that pearls are usually irregular in shape, each one is different and to find one that is completely round is almost unheard of, not to mention trying to make a whole necklace of pearls that are all more or less the same. Natural pearls are the rarest and most highly valued variety, but nowadays most pearl jewellery is made from cultured or farmed pearls, which are grown on pearl farms… Continue reading What are the Main Differences Between Freshwater and Saltwater Pearls?...
Name jewelry is one of the trendiest types of fashion accessory for both men and women. A large part of this modern upswing in popularity is due to the hip hop culture where large name jewelry items have become the defining fashion in bling. While much of the current fashion is large, bling-style pieces, name jewelry can range from delicate and subtle to big and bold. But name jewelry is also very popular as traditional mothers jewelry. Name rings and name necklaces are by far the most popular items with online stores and retailers… Continue reading Name Jewelry Trends...
