Damaged Opal Ring
Damaged Opal Ring Question: Hi, I went through the website and did not see anything that applied to this particular ring.
Opal Identification & Value (Rocks, Minerals and Gemstones)
Price: $49.95
I received it as a gift from an Antique Store. The ring looks to be rose gold and had a very large OVAL WHITE Opal in it.
I cracked it unfortunately.
The local jeweler said the opal was worth about $1800.00 BECAUSE OF SIZE and he did not know the markings and suggested I go on line.
He thought it looked Nordic or Swiss.
So here are the markings the best I can describe.
All marks are a box stamp with a raised image:
1st box is too worn to tell,
2ND box looks like a 88,
3rd box is triangle < with a line like an arrow out the back that has a cross +,
4Th is an upside down triangle (like a delta)
5Th is an an arrow going the >direction
6Th again is too worn to tell to me it looks like a fish.
What do you think?.
Please help me solve the mystery. I want to put another stone in it but if it effects the value I need to know.
Thank so much for you time.

G’day and many thanks for your email
The opal - even though it is cracked, can still be salvaged somewhat. If your local FRIENDLY jeweler can arrange to have the gemstone recut, you might end up with two smaller stones which could then be made into earrings or similar.
DON’T JUST THROW IT AWAY…
Most Solid White Opal comes from Australia so I don’t understand why your jeweler suggests it may be Nordic? unless the hallmarks confirm it.
The hallmarks are also strange as there are two many of them, unless your descriptions are wrong. Are you sure the marks are not an anchor on its side
