Chlorine Damage on Gold Jewelry
White gold and chlorine Question: Hi, I wore my engagement ring, which is yellow gold with a diamond set in white gold.

When I went swimming, some, but not all, of the “white gold” section has gone almost black/ dark silver.
Can white gold have this reaction or has the jeweller just encased the diamond in silver?

You are not going to know until you have the ring tested. But saying that - the likelihood of a gold ring having a silver setting is very remote. They used to do it in antique jewelry - but not today.

Swimming pools use Chlorine to keep them clean - but it is an acid - just like a mild form of household bleach.
The reaction to the setting is a bad form of acid burn. The good news is it isn’t permanent but you will have to take it to your local friendly jewelry and have them professionally clean and polish the ring.
Your jeweler will also be able to reassure you as to the quality of your item.
