Bridal Ring Valuation Question: Thank you for your help.

I have another question if its ok.

This ring set is as you know 14K gold. The band part has 4 small diamonds and the engagement part has approx. 1/4 ct. center stone and 1 small diamond on each side.

Engagement and Wedding Rings: The Definitive Buying Guide for People in Love

Now, my question is, if I paid 250.00 dollars for the set, did I get a good deal or bad deal?

Once again, thanks for your time.

Answer: G'day again Debbie and many thanks for the follow up question.

As you can imagine there are hundreds of variables to take into account when valuing jewelry. It's NOT just the diamond size (weight), but the color, cut and clarity of the gemstones too.

While your ring set is in 14 Karat gold, the price would also be affected by how it was made, What is the weight, How are the gems set and so on.

That is why you pay BIG BUCKS to get a genuine Gemologist Valuer's Report - because it takes time.

There is an alternative though (three actually) which you might like to consider.

1: Look in your local FRIENDLY jewelers window or in their catalogues and brochures until you find something similar in size and weight and quality. This will give you a base price (NOT an Insurance replacement Appraisal) but a good understanding of the retail cost of your item.

You can do that with all your jewelry. It takes time but hey - it's FREE... ;-)

2: Check out sites like eBay or the Antique Jewelry Fair at http://www.antique-jewelry-fair.com and do a similar shop comparison. These prices are usually cheaper than the first option as there is NO tax etc...

3: If you want a valid Insurance Replacement Certificate you can actually 'Do-it-Yourself' and print the certificate on your printer at home or work. The cost is low and you get great support - I know because it's me.

You can use the Jewelry Appraisals Online Center right here and simply follow the Steps to the end.

You should read some of the other help articles on the site too.

You won't need any special equipment except a plastic ruler and a cheap plastic eyeglass. Maybe the Pawn Broker who sold you the rings gave you a receipt with weights and details on - that helps.

Don't be scared of it though. My eight year old granddaughter can do an appraisal in under 15 minutes.

Hope this helps...

Jewelry hallmarks

Professional jewelry appraisals completed by gemologists and valuers often have to take into account the effect the jewelry hallmarks have on the value of each item being appraised. Do they alter the price, up or down, depending on the hallmark. The simple answer is yes – and no. It depends on the hallmarks themselves and where they come from.

I get similar questions on forums and ‘expert’ websites, together with my own members discussion group. They are usually in the following format, and in general the same questions get asked over and over again. They go… Continue reading Jewelry Hallmarks And What They Mean...

Most people when they imagine a pearl are picturing perfect large round spherical gems, creamy white in colour with a shimmery iridescent surface. The reality is that pearls are usually irregular in shape, each one is different and to find one that is completely round is almost unheard of, not to mention trying to make a whole necklace of pearls that are all more or less the same. Natural pearls are the rarest and most highly valued variety, but nowadays most pearl jewellery is made from cultured or farmed pearls, which are grown on pearl farms… Continue reading What are the Main Differences Between Freshwater and Saltwater Pearls?...

Name jewelry is one of the trendiest types of fashion accessory for both men and women. A large part of this modern upswing in popularity is due to the hip hop culture where large name jewelry items have become the defining fashion in bling. While much of the current fashion is large, bling-style pieces, name jewelry can range from delicate and subtle to big and bold. But name jewelry is also very popular as traditional mothers jewelry. Name rings and name necklaces are by far the most popular items with online stores and retailers… Continue reading Name Jewelry Trends...
