Old Cameo Locket
Old Cameo Locket Question: Hi there,
I am not sure if i am asking the right person or not, I hope I am as I have a tiny gold locket and I am confused by the markings on it.
It is a delicate little thing, only about 1 and a half cms wide and long. It is heart shaped, with a thin zigzag pattern engraved around the edge on the front.
Cameos: Classical to Costume (Schiffer Book for Collectors)
Price: $40.00
After the pattern is a few, spaced out, swirly like lines that swirl around the main focus point, which is a cameo which sits in the middle, attached in 6 claws. The cameo is about 1cm wide and long and sits closer to the top of the locket then the bottom.
It is very pretty and opens up, it does not have any hinges, it simply has two rings attached to the top of the locket, one on each side, that a link goes through so it can be put on a chain and the top of locket simply sits on top of the bottom half and when it opens ups, it opens up completely with the top being able to be flipped over so the front and back of the locket can lay flat on a surface.
The back of the locket is stamped down the bottom near the V part of the heart and it reads 10CT.L.D this is marked straight across the bottom of the locket, i am unsure what it means, does it mean Gold Lined?
I am unsure, thank you for your help. Jo
P.s I have tried to find the answer but can not find any gold markings that match or explain it, thank you for you time, if possible would you be able to guess it age? Thanks.
Answer: In answer to your old cameo locket question
G’day Jo and many thanks for your query.
I would say from your description that is is 10ct lined - which would make the cameo not real, but a plastic imitation. These items were very popular after the Second World War when plastics became easier to use.
While it may be very pretty - it would simply have been a ‘Tourist’ style of jewelry, something which may have been given as a gift to a loved one, because gold was not easy to get then for the majority of people.

HOWEVER: (and here comes my disclaimer) I can’t see it, feel it, measure or test it, so it’s only my opinion based on the information you provided. So I would suggest before you do anything else - take it to your local FRIENDLY jeweler and have them take a look at it. They will be able to tell quickly if it is gold or not. From that information you can decide if you want to go further and have a full gemological appraisal done.
Only then will you be able to know for sure and can stop guessing.
You might also like to add this query to my Jewelry Forum at http://www.online-jewelry-appraisals.net/jewelry-forum/ as other may have had a similar problem.
Can’t hurt anyway and who knows what answers you may get.
