Antique Locket Question: I have a beautiful vintage locket that I want to find out more about.

The front of the locket has a lovely floral design with rose and green colored silver ~ really pretty.

500 Pendants & Lockets: Contemporary Interpretations of Classic Adornments

Price: $16.47

It is about 2" tall, and I believe it is silver.

On the back there is a line of three small hallmarks -

  • a small "g",
  • a sideways anchor,
  • and a lion.

Above those is another hallmark with WF in it.

The back does have some "dents" in it from something. I can send pics if you need them!

Mainly I'm trying to find out it's age, and possible value. Thanks so much ~

ANSWER: G'day Aimee and many thanks for your query.

What you have here is a classic British Hallmark. If you need to find out more about UK Hallmarks there is a complimentary course available here (recommended):

The small 'g' is the Date letter to indicate when it was made, while the anchor is the assay office mark showing it was made in Birmingham. The Lion is a quality mark to show it is Sterling silver.

I hope you can help me with this info, then! I didn’t know what all to include.

It is a small (lowercase) g - appears to be old english style font.
The WF is in a rounded rectangular shape - almost an oval shape.
Does that help with identifying info?

    Thanks so much!

And if not - where is the members area - on the allexperts site or yours?

Thanks again for all of your help!!

G’day Aimee and many thanks for your follow up.

First I should apologize for the delay in getting back to you.

As you may know President Bush was here in Australia over the weekend for the APEC conference, so the Aussie Government (bless ‘em) gave everyone a long weekend break, so I went away for a couple of days and only just got back.

Blame Bush - not me :-)

The Birmingham Assay office hallmark changes in blocks of 20 - 25 years or so, and naturally the letters repeat - but slightly different each time.

Over the past Century a sort of italic ‘g’ was used in 1956 then further back a more bold ‘g’ was used in 1931 but the shape of the stamp was square with the corners cut off and a squiggly bit on the bottom.

Next was a lowercase ‘g’ for 1906 while the last time an Old English font was used was circa 1881 - right in the middle of Queen Victoria’s reign.

Now as I said - I can’t see it - or even know if the marks are genuine.

The new Member’s website is at this address:

http://www.online-jewelry-appraisals.net and should be open for business now. There are lots of articles and other areas for you to go anyway - so it’s well worth a visit - PLUS it will be quicker to reach me, or my team from there.

    Hope this helps.
