Question: Hi I have a gold ring that my father left me. It is a gold ring with a large oval ruby in colour stone in it.

Inside the ring it has the markings as follows…
H.C&S crown(not the word but a crown symbol)

(-+ ( Yes it is an anchor east west in direction)

Any help in determining its value would be great

On the face of it, the hallmarks looked like UK British marks but there are some marks missing and others which simply do not fit.
The H.C&S are Makers or manufacture marks. In this case I would suggest a store name such as Harry Clark and Sons (not a real name) for example.

The crown is typical of British marks and indicated the ‘Quality’ while the 18 IS the quality. ie: 18ct or 18K.
The east west mark is an anchor, would be for the Birmingham assay office in the UK.
The date letter ‘E’ when used with a set of tables will show the date it was made, but there are variations to these.
As mentioned before - the anchor is the symbol for the Birmingham assay office in the UK, But I need two more pieces of info.
What is the SHAPE of the stamp (square with corners cut off or round or oval etc).
What Font is the Date letter E (is it uppercase - lowercase - Fancy - Old English etc).
With those two pieces of info we can pin it down to the exact year it was made now we know it was stamped in Birmingham UK. This is important information when it comes to recording the details in your Jewelry Appraisals Online form.

There is also a free email course there on UK British Hallmarks which will explain stamp marks in more detail.
