Security Advice For Your Jewelry...

For you to enjoy your treasures, they need to be somewhere close and accessible, but NOT in the Bedside Jewelry Box.

if it looks like gold, it must be gold... Right?

This myth can work in OUR Favor, so we should think about the following advice and ACT on it...

Jewelry BoxAs mentioned - your treasures need to be somewhere close and accessible, but NOT in the Bedside Jewelry Box.

Although we DO advise a Jewelry Box on the Dresser and easily seen, BUT CONTAINING SEVERAL PIECES OF JUNK JEWELRY.

It is a well documented fact that Burglars nearly ALWAYS check the Bedroom First knowing that people hide things there.

In general terms we have discovered, through HUGE amounts of research, that your average Crim or Thug, doesn't know the difference between Gold or Gold Plated items. Diamonds look like Shiny pebbles of Glass.

In the dimly lit beam of a torch, a handful of Jewelry, stuffed into a pocket, stops them searching any further, and they leave without any more damage.

So if it looks like gold, it must be gold... Right?

See how this works in OUR Favor?

So OCCASIONALLY buy that antique looking string of pearls (which WE know are glass) from the local Op shop or Charity Church Bazaar, and salt it into the 'attractive' Junk items in the Jewelry Box on the Dresser.

Costume Jewelry CAN look a Million Dollars. Old Brooches of a Base metal and containing a 'Plastic' Cameo, can feel and seem to be worth all the trouble. Help these poor Burglars out.

Do the right thing. Give them something to Steal, and they will leave you alone, next time.

But what about the Good Stuff?

If you do 'Hide' it somewhere in your home there are a couple of points we wish to discuss.

Tell a trusted or close relative where they are.

Too many people hide things and then forget where they put them. Over the years it slips from memory and after they 'Cross Over' as John Edwards would say, they get tossed out with the rest of the rubbish, never to see light of day again.

Shame. Tell someone.

Don't hide the items in extreme temperatures.

It has seemed that over the past decade or so, some people have been hiding things in the Freezer. This is NOT recommended as Gold and Silver items may survive, but the gemstones are sure to suffer.

Opal for example contains a great amount of water in their chemical make up. Freeze opal and you will NOT have anything with color left after a very short while. Pearls too and most of the softer 'Organic' gemstones like Coral or Ivory or Amber will all be damaged by this process.

The Kitchen is a good place to hide things, as is the Laundry.

We have had some clients (friends of ours) who hide things in the Children's Toy room. As long as it can't be found or played with by the Kids, it is safe.

If you come home one day and the Darling Little Ones are wearing your best Diamond Jewelry, chances are you didn't hide it well enough. Under the Lego pieces, just doesn't cut it.

Regardless of whether you have your items hidden or in a 'Safety Deposit' style box, or in a wall safe etc, you should still insure the items. We have mentioned this before, so if you're not sure, please read the section on 'Selling your Jewelry' or go direct to our article on the Introduction to Jewelry Appraisals Online Valuations for more advice.

Jewelry hallmarks

Professional jewelry appraisals completed by gemologists and valuers often have to take into account the effect the jewelry hallmarks have on the value of each item being appraised. Do they alter the price, up or down, depending on the hallmark. The simple answer is yes – and no. It depends on the hallmarks themselves and where they come from.

I get similar questions on forums and ‘expert’ websites, together with my own members discussion group. They are usually in the following format, and in general the same questions get asked over and over again. They go… Continue reading Jewelry Hallmarks And What They Mean...

Most people when they imagine a pearl are picturing perfect large round spherical gems, creamy white in colour with a shimmery iridescent surface. The reality is that pearls are usually irregular in shape, each one is different and to find one that is completely round is almost unheard of, not to mention trying to make a whole necklace of pearls that are all more or less the same. Natural pearls are the rarest and most highly valued variety, but nowadays most pearl jewellery is made from cultured or farmed pearls, which are grown on pearl farms… Continue reading What are the Main Differences Between Freshwater and Saltwater Pearls?...

Name jewelry is one of the trendiest types of fashion accessory for both men and women. A large part of this modern upswing in popularity is due to the hip hop culture where large name jewelry items have become the defining fashion in bling. While much of the current fashion is large, bling-style pieces, name jewelry can range from delicate and subtle to big and bold. But name jewelry is also very popular as traditional mothers jewelry. Name rings and name necklaces are by far the most popular items with online stores and retailers… Continue reading Name Jewelry Trends...

What people are saying about this...

Just a quick add on here… There are some companies that manufacture what are called “Diversion Safes”. These resemble common household items, like soda cans, batteries, and various dry goods containers, but have a small, generally waterproof, “stash” compartment. These are ideal for keeping your jewelry safe and accessible. One of the best ones I have seen is the WD-40 can, it looks real, and even feels real when you shake it. No burglar is going to steal your WD-40, especially when you’ve got your real looking costume jewelry ready for easy picking.
