So a red gemstone is a Ruby, a blue one is a Sapphire and a white clear gemstone is a Diamond right!

  • Errrrrr! Sorry wrong answer.

Diamonds and Gemstones (Rocks, Minerals, and Resources)

Price: $7.15

Yet how many of us think that way, especially when we are looking at Estate Jewelry. And just because it's an Antique makes it no easier when we try to Identify Diamonds.

They were pretty smart and very cunning those Victorian and Edwardian dealers (Remember Fagin and Ikey Solomon the 'Prince of Fences')? If not - read on...

So there you are, standing outside an Antique shop in the middle of a city, or looking at a ring in the window of a Pawnbroker and you see this old, dirty ring with a white gemstone, about the size of a button on your remote control, and you think "Fifty bucks..... Might be a diamond."

  • Errrrrrr! Second wrong answer!

So what could it be and how can you know? Well pretty much anyway.

One is to always deal with someone you trust, and if possible get a valuation done on the item from someone other then the people you purchased the item from (because Fagin still lives somewhere).

The second is to buy a small eyeglass or Jewelers Loupe.

These range from the fantastic plastic at about ten dollars, up to a Triplet lens Jewelers' Loupe at several hundred dollars.

For me, I use both types.

But generally the plastic one is fine for general observations and is more than adequate for general observations when you are completing your jewelry appraisals online form . And that is the key!

Jewelry hallmarks

Professional jewelry appraisals completed by gemologists and valuers often have to take into account the effect the jewelry hallmarks have on the value of each item being appraised. Do they alter the price, up or down, depending on the hallmark. The simple answer is yes – and no. It depends on the hallmarks themselves and where they come from.

I get similar questions on forums and ‘expert’ websites, together with my own members discussion group. They are usually in the following format, and in general the same questions get asked over and over again. They go… Continue reading Jewelry Hallmarks And What They Mean...

Most people when they imagine a pearl are picturing perfect large round spherical gems, creamy white in colour with a shimmery iridescent surface. The reality is that pearls are usually irregular in shape, each one is different and to find one that is completely round is almost unheard of, not to mention trying to make a whole necklace of pearls that are all more or less the same. Natural pearls are the rarest and most highly valued variety, but nowadays most pearl jewellery is made from cultured or farmed pearls, which are grown on pearl farms… Continue reading What are the Main Differences Between Freshwater and Saltwater Pearls?...

Name jewelry is one of the trendiest types of fashion accessory for both men and women. A large part of this modern upswing in popularity is due to the hip hop culture where large name jewelry items have become the defining fashion in bling. While much of the current fashion is large, bling-style pieces, name jewelry can range from delicate and subtle to big and bold. But name jewelry is also very popular as traditional mothers jewelry. Name rings and name necklaces are by far the most popular items with online stores and retailers… Continue reading Name Jewelry Trends...

Re identifying diamonds. Using a jewelers loupe what do you look for that separates a real diamond from say a cubic Zirconia?
    Thanks

  2. gemmo1

G’day Millie and many thanks for your query.

I have to say that it can take years to get it right because experience only comes with time.

With the loupe I certainly look for inclusions which are NATURAL to the Diamond as opposed to a LACK OF INCLUSIONS in gems like Cubic Zirconia.

It is as if they are TOO GOOD.

You will be able to read more about diamonds in our new sister website at http://gemstone-appraisals.com/ which is coming out of beta testing this week.

All Gemological information will come from there.
