How Pure Is Platinum?
Platinum ring Question: I have a platinum ring and on the inside it says PLAT with a star after it.
I was trying to figure out how pure the platinum is that was used in it because I am thinking about selling it and although at one time I had a certificate for it from the original jeweler I have moved and cannot seem to find it.
Price: $6.75
I think the purest would say 950 in the marking but I can’t seem to find out what mine is I don’t have alot of time to go have it appraised on my days off I am usually pretty busy so I was just wondering if anyone here might be able to help me.
I bought in in Philadelphia and I live in California now and I had a certificate the jeweler gave me with it but it is lost in the move somehow.
Any help would be appreciated.

Answer: G’day JJ and many thanks for your query.
Generally in older jewelry the PLAT hallmark signifies pure platinum. The current hallmark such as PLAT950 indicated it has 950 parts per thousand of pure platinum and 50 part per thousand of other metals. That is an industry standard and works for gold as well. ie: 750 in a gold ring shows it has 750 parts per thousand of pure gold and 250 parts of other metals - such as copper or nickel - to give it the color.
