Things To Know About Diamonds

January 2nd, 2010

Diamonds are the iconic symbol of engagement and betrothal but it is has not always been the case.  Throughout history, different cultures have placed different value and interpretation on the beauty and brilliance of one of the rarest, but most sought after precious stones.

Let’s dispel a modern myth immediately; the vast majority of diamonds are mined not to go on your finger or into a piece of jewelry, but to be fixed on the end of drill bit or other industrial use.Diamond is one of the hardest substances known to man - which means that no matter how pretty a diamond looks, it is much more valuable in an industrial setting because of all it can accomplish.  Many people make the mistake of thinking that diamonds are “the” hardest material known to man which is incorrect, a man-made substance known as “nonorods” is actually the hardest substance known at this time.

Most diamonds, instead of being colorless or clear, are actually a shade of yellow. An uncut diamond typically has a color like dirty dishwater!Once cut, many stones have a yellowish hue but this is minimized by clever cutting of the stone and skillful placement in a ring or jewelry setting. Of all diamonds, pink diamonds are the rarest and most expensive!

150 carats are stitched into the world's most expensive wedding dress; making it worth a staggering milion!

The public knew by the 1940's that diamonds were a girl's best friend, but Indians actually discovered the precious gems over 3,000 years ago.Based in South Africa, De Beers is the largest miner and producer of diamonds; they came up with what is arguably the most successful marketing campaign in history. To start with, “Diamonds are Forever” and “Diamonds are a Girls Best Friend” were coined by their marketing staff.  They also managed to convey the idea that a diamond engagement ring was part of Anglo-Saxon Christian tradition and, best of all, they have been entirely successful in persuading millions of eager young men that when they come to buy a diamond engagement ring it should cost at least three months of their salary!
Is this steeped in any form of tradition?

Not one bit of it!

Diamonds are believed to have been formed around 3 billion years ago 100 miles below the surface of the Earth; making them among the oldest stones on the planet.

India was the only source of diamonds in the world until the 6th century, and up until then the Ancient Romans monopolized the diamond trade.Diamonds were heavily used in the manufacture of decorative talismans to protect the Roman wearer, who adopted the belief that diamonds could ward off evil spirits from the Indians.

The Cullinan diamond is the largest diamond ever discovered and in its rough, uncut form weighed 3,106 carats. It was cut into nine pieces - the largest (called the Star of Africa) is the centerpiece of the Royal Sceptre part of the British Crown Jewels.

Jewelry hallmarks

Professional jewelry appraisals completed by gemologists and valuers often have to take into account the effect the jewelry hallmarks have on the value of each item being appraised. Do they alter the price, up or down, depending on the hallmark. The simple answer is yes – and no. It depends on the hallmarks themselves and where they come from.

I get similar questions on forums and ‘expert’ websites, together with my own members discussion group. They are usually in the following format, and in general the same questions get asked over and over again. They go… Continue reading Jewelry Hallmarks And What They Mean...

Most people when they imagine a pearl are picturing perfect large round spherical gems, creamy white in colour with a shimmery iridescent surface. The reality is that pearls are usually irregular in shape, each one is different and to find one that is completely round is almost unheard of, not to mention trying to make a whole necklace of pearls that are all more or less the same. Natural pearls are the rarest and most highly valued variety, but nowadays most pearl jewellery is made from cultured or farmed pearls, which are grown on pearl farms… Continue reading What are the Main Differences Between Freshwater and Saltwater Pearls?...

Name jewelry is one of the trendiest types of fashion accessory for both men and women. A large part of this modern upswing in popularity is due to the hip hop culture where large name jewelry items have become the defining fashion in bling. While much of the current fashion is large, bling-style pieces, name jewelry can range from delicate and subtle to big and bold. But name jewelry is also very popular as traditional mothers jewelry. Name rings and name necklaces are by far the most popular items with online stores and retailers… Continue reading Name Jewelry Trends...
