Grown out of Akoya oysters are Akoya pearls which are among the most popular types of pearls of today. These pearls are often cultured and harvested in the farms of Japan and China. Most often, an Akoya pearl is considered to have the most luster which is the main reason why these pearls are very highly valued.
However, the pearl's luster is only one of the five qualities that are being considered to determine the quality of the pearls. These certain qualities include color, size, surface, and shape of the pearl.
Pearls are of various colors like white, silver, cream, champagne, gold, green, blue, black, and a lot more. They also have various overtones that are very much recognizable from the basic color of the pearl. Akoya pearls are often white or cream in color accentuated with overtones like silver, cream, or rose. It is through the color of the pearl that a person is able to determine the best pearl for her.

Size directly affects the quality of the pearl. Typically, a pearl with a larger size fairly has a much higher price. This is done by simply measuring the diameter of the pearl in terms of millimeters. But the Akoya pearls are relatively small in sizes as they are grown from the world's smallest pearl-producing oyster. The general size of Akoya pearls fits within 6-8 millimeters and is somewhat smaller than freshwater, Tahitian, and South Sea pearls. But then, most of the pearls that are being marketed today fall in the range of Akoya pearls.
However, the size of the pearls that is often marketed and sold today are that of Akoya's. Basically, a pearl needs to have no spots, bumps, and discolorations in order for it to have a higher quality. Akoya pearls are usually reflective and shiny which significantly elevates the quality of the pearls.
Freshwater pearls also vary in their shapes. They sometimes appear in tear-drop shapes, button shapes that are flattened into a disk-like button, ringed pearls, and the baroque pearls. Baroque pearls are those that happen to asymmetrical or abstract in shapes. But the most admired shape of them all is the perfect round which only comes in rare times and with a very high price. One good example is the Akoya pearl which often comes out to have round or near-round shapes. These basic facts clearly define an Akoya pearl as one of the highest quality of pearls. Today, Akoya pearls are the most sought after of pearls and are perfect when made into sets of jewelries.

I get similar questions on forums and ‘expert’ websites, together with my own members discussion group. They are usually in the following format, and in general the same questions get asked over and over again. They go… Continue reading Jewelry Hallmarks And What They Mean...

Vintage is often a term that is used when describing fashions from the past that aren’t quiet at the level of being considered antiques but are still classics. Vintage engagement rings can be from any time period considered to be more modern than ancient, typically from the early 1900’s to the retro period of even into the 1970’s.
Most of the engagement rings from these time periods had very distinctive qualities that uniquely categorize the rings as being vintage. Typically the rings included both yellow and white gold combinations on the… Continue reading Engagement Rings From The Past ...
