Gold Karat mark Question: Hi Bill or Sally,
Recently, before purchasing a pair of gold earrings on eBay, I sent the seller a question asking if the earrings in question were stamped with the 14k mark as they were reported as being.
Buying & Selling Jewelry on eBay (Buying & Selling on Ebay)
Price: $12.83
I got the response, that yes they were, so I placed my bid in confidence, and won the auction.
Upon receiving the earrings, I saw that only the clasp had the 14k stamp, not the body of the earring.
I sent the seller another email asking:
"if the body of the earrings gold, and if they are, whey don't they have a karat mark. Isn't it the law that all gold bare a karat mark?"
The response I got from the seller is:
"The law is that the earring (including the clasp/ post) of the earring has to be all 14k gold in order for it to be stamped 14k. Almost all earrings are stamped on the post because otherwise the design of most earrings would get ruined by the stamping."
My question to you is, is that true? Can I pretty much relax, and not feel "taken"?

Answer: G'day Patti and many thanks for your query.
You have not been 'Taken' as the seller is correct, but remember that you and the seller can both see the item - I can't, so I can only go on what you have told me.
As a general rule, if an item of gold is solid and sealed by solder joins, then any part of the item can be stamped, as it refers to all of it.

If you consider a gold chain for example, there is no longer the need to stamp every link (like they did on antique heavy chains) because each link is soldered shut, so while they are all separate parts, they are all effectively one item.
The same applies to earrings or brooches or any other type of jewelry.
If they are soldered together and not just simply a 'clip-on' type attachment, then one stamp is enough.

In earrings it is generally on the 'post' or clasp, while if there is a butterfly clip, that too would have its own stamp because it is a separate part of the item.

have been left earrinds look like dimonds mark on clasp says mecan pa 18k 750 al are they gold and dimonds or just costume jewllery

You need to get your local FRIENDLY Jeweler take a look at them for you. The hallmarks you have described indicate 18 Karat Gold. The 750 is simply the International Decimal mark for 18 Karat - They both mean the same thing.
