Turquoise In Silver Jewelry

February 4th, 2010

What You Should Consider When Looking For Turquoise In Silver Jewelry:

Turquoise is a beautiful gem that is wonderful in silver turquoise jewelry. Scientifically it's a blend of phosphates and aluminum with a small amount of copper oxide, which gives it its blue color, and manganese oxide, calcium, zinc and iron.

The green color comes from the iron or aluminum and yellow is from the zinc.

Green is the most common color for turquoise gemstones, and as a matter of fact blue gemstones very often change to green when exposed to sunlight for a long time.

Different blends of these elements give turquoise its range of colors, with the most valued being those with a deep blue color and yellow colored stones having the lowest value.

High quality gems, for instance Persian turquoise, do not tend to fade and maintain their lovely blue color indefinitely.

Some gems have a main color with colored lines in a spider web pattern marking the surface. This is caused by uneven dispersal of the different elements present in the stone and the marks might be yellow, black or brown in lots of patterns.

However pure colored gems are more sought after than gems with a spider web matrix though turquoise gemstones of intense blue color, even though they have a spider web matrix, are more sought after than yellow or green pure colored gemstones.

Gemset Turquoise JewelryNatural gemstones of a pure color, i.e. those which are not marked with spider web matrix, are rare and are very highly prized.

Turquoise Treatments:

About 10% of the turquoise used in jewelry is natural, high quality gemstone. Over 80% is treated from soft, rough turquoise in order to harden it enough to be used. The procedure also increases stability and develops the gemstone's color.

Turquoise from a number of countries, for example China, is always too soft and must be treated. However the process yields good-looking gems, which, while less valuable than untreated gems, nevertheless make fantastic jewelry.

These procedures enhance the color of the gems and also makes them tougher which gives them a longer life.

A treatment method that is used to enhance the color involves injecting an epoxy resin containing a dye into the gem. The color is durable and won't change.

Soft turquoise from China is toughened by injecting the gems with liquid plastic. Another approach is to use epoxy resin without a dye in order stabilize the gem but won't change the color.

Simulated turquoise is also made from liquid plastic blended with powdered turquoise. This kind of turquoise is obviously very cheap. These imitation gems may perhaps be sold as fine quality turquoise turquoise and may be coated in plastic or waxed.

Taking Care of Turquoise Gemstones:

Turquoise is porous and soft so should be looked after carefully. It should never be worn at times when scratching can be occur and should be shielded from impact always. Never wear turquoise jewelry when washing the car or gardening!

Store turquoise jewelry in its own softly lined box and do not store with other, harder stones which could scratch the stones.

Turquoise gemstones can soak up liquids so keep them away from hot water, oils, chemicals and even cosmetics and perfumes. These could be absorbed by the stone which may become dull and may change color.

You can clean turquoise by using mild soapy water and then drying gently with a soft cloth. Make certain it is completely dry before storing it away and on no account use an ultrasonic cleaner which may result in cracking of the gem.

Conclusion:

Turquoise is a beautiful, eye-catching gemstone which is rare and highly valued. While it definitely does have some disadvantages in that it must be taken great care of and some of the blue stones can turn green over time, it makes superb silver turquoise jewelry as the lovely blue color is perfectly complemented by the silver.
