Ivory Value in 2007?

July 10th, 2007

Ivory Value in 2007 Question to 'Ask The Appraiser:' We have a carved ivory rose that is attached to a necklace of what I think are pearls. They might be Ivory also.

Gem and Ornamental Materials of Organic Origin

Price: $49.45

I have a photo of this necklace being worn in 1923.

Does vintage ivory have any value in the year 2007?

Answer: G'day again Brent and many thanks for your query - and what a great question...

The simple answer is - Yes and No!

You see there are collectors who will pay a good price for Ivory (if you can find them - collectors I mean, not Ivory pieces) and this is the Yes part in answer to your question, especially as you have photographic evidence (well sort of) to date the necklace as well.

There are many more on places like eBay - so check there too...

But the No side of the question is the popular misconception that Animals HAD TO BE KILLED in order to get the gem.

The Green movement has justified the stance that CURRENT supply comes from Poaching, which nobody wants to see - even the collectors - AND ME!

In actual fact there are many examples of Ivory coming on to the market because the animal had died NATURALLY in the wild, and the Ivory was taken after death. I can live with that.

Governments also arranged automatic culling, which added to the supply, and finally (not often thought of) Ivory came about through the Slaughter yards of animals which we can say were NOT always what people thought there were.

Ivory is NOT just Elephant but is a collective name for 'Teeth'.

Many a cow tooth ended up as a small (but treasured) item of carved ivory. Holy 'Cow' Batman! ;-)

You are still going to need a written appraisal to prove it is - what you think it is.

Your local FRIENDLY jeweler is your best bet here, while we can, and do, appraise Ivory in the Jewelry Appraisals Online Center, you might need a gemologist to confirm the item first.

Hope this helps...

Jewelry hallmarks

Professional jewelry appraisals completed by gemologists and valuers often have to take into account the effect the jewelry hallmarks have on the value of each item being appraised. Do they alter the price, up or down, depending on the hallmark. The simple answer is yes – and no. It depends on the hallmarks themselves and where they come from.

I get similar questions on forums and ‘expert’ websites, together with my own members discussion group. They are usually in the following format, and in general the same questions get asked over and over again. They go… Continue reading Jewelry Hallmarks And What They Mean...

Most people when they imagine a pearl are picturing perfect large round spherical gems, creamy white in colour with a shimmery iridescent surface. The reality is that pearls are usually irregular in shape, each one is different and to find one that is completely round is almost unheard of, not to mention trying to make a whole necklace of pearls that are all more or less the same. Natural pearls are the rarest and most highly valued variety, but nowadays most pearl jewellery is made from cultured or farmed pearls, which are grown on pearl farms… Continue reading What are the Main Differences Between Freshwater and Saltwater Pearls?...

Name jewelry is one of the trendiest types of fashion accessory for both men and women. A large part of this modern upswing in popularity is due to the hip hop culture where large name jewelry items have become the defining fashion in bling. While much of the current fashion is large, bling-style pieces, name jewelry can range from delicate and subtle to big and bold. But name jewelry is also very popular as traditional mothers jewelry. Name rings and name necklaces are by far the most popular items with online stores and retailers… Continue reading Name Jewelry Trends...

G’day Cookie Miller and many thanks for your comments.

The simple answer is Yes – and No.

The reason is because these are classified as Objects d’art – highly collectible and should be appraised. BUT – They are not jewelry items so could NOT be appraised by a standard jewelry appraiser. You would need to see a specialist. Try an antique dealer or better yet – an auction house that deals in such objects.

Hope that helps. Let me know how you get on with this.

I have an ivory bracelet that was a gift from West Ivory Coast in Africa. I was twenty years old. I am fifty-four and the bracelet is in excellent condition. How much would it appraise for?
