What’s My Old Pin Brooch Worth?
What’s My Old Pin Brooch Worth? I have a old pin(brooch). I don’t know exactly how old.
I was wondering if the thing was worth a significant amount of money.
Illustrated Guide to Jewelry Appraising, 3rd Edition: Antique, Period, and Modern
Price: $25.78 USD
For all I know it may not be worth $2.00. Then again it may be worth $200. And Lord knows if it was worth a whole lot, I would be estatic.
How can I have it looked at by someone who can tell me?
There’s no one locally around me and I have no way to commute a long distance to have it looked at.
Like I said, it may not be worth nothing, but since I am trying to relocate with my two kids and I desperately need money, I thought I would check into it since I’ve been wanting to know this anyway.
Any help you could offer would be appreciated.
Thank you. Melissa

G’day Melissa and many thanks for your comment
You really only have a couple of choices and none of them are great.
Firstly you should check places like eBay and do a comparison shop. Look for items which are similar.

You can also try the Antique Jewelry Fair at: http://www.antique-jewelry-fair.com/ as they get old items too, but are fixed on price.
If there is no-one locally (antique dealer, second-hand buyer, pawnbroker etc) then you are going to have to send it away.
However I would suggest you first try my favorite - F & R (which stands for Friends and Relatives) especially if they live in an area where there ARE dealers and merchants and auction houses etc.
Send the pin to them and ask them to do the leg work. Offer them a small cut when it sells (say 25% percent).
By using F&R’s you know the pin will be safe and the feedback you get will be genuine.
Other than that - You are going to have to take a Holiday Vacation sometime - Take thew Pin with you and start the procedure that way.
The main problem is, no-one on the Internet can see, feel , touch and test the item - only you.
The best you can hope for is a comparison shop as mentioned before. Once you have all the correct information you can use the Jewelry Appraisals Online System to upgrade each year or so.
I will add your query to my blog, and if you send me an email with a photo of the pin attached - I will add it to the comment. Who knows - someone else might just have a similar item? Can’t hurt anyway as we don’t give out any personal details (other than a first name) in the blog, so you won’t have any hassles.
UNDER NO CIRCUMSTANCES should you advertise it for sale in your local paper. You don’t want people coming to your home looking at everything and knowing there is jewelry there.
Hope this helps. David.
