Gold Cross Badge
Question: I have a gold/red cross (pin on back of the badge) 2.5cm.
The Graphic Art of the Enamel Badge
Price: $1.12
Has a small animal (rat or mole), then the number 18 and then the letter W (in upper case).
Any ideas on this hallmark?
I live in New Zealand and purchased it off the internet with no history available. thanks
Answer: G’day and many thanks for your query
Your description (rat or mole) doesn’t mean anything to me while the 18 (suggests 18ct) and the W would usually show a date letter. But none of these are Proved.
The main problem with Hallmarks is that there is NO central registry for world Hallmarks.
Just to add further confusion - some countries in South East Asia for example, have a HUGE manufacturing base yet no rules or regulations when it comes to Hallmarks, Store names, Manufacturers or Maker’s Marks.

Can you imagine the millions of Hobby Jewelers, some very good, who make for a small market. They stamp their items with no thought to ‘How people are going to find them’ years from now.
Basically this means that anyone - anywhere - can make and stamp their jewelry with whatever they want.
This has been the bane of Jewelers and Valuers (myself included) for many years.
So we all have to scramble for whatever info we can find in books from all over the world and the few websites which provide just a SMALL amount of data.
One useful place is the Antique Jewelry of the 20th Century website because they have a complimentary email course on UK British Hallmarks. You can find them at:
http://www.jewellery-antiques.com/
Hope this helps - and welcome to the frustrating world of Hallmarking, but remember to record your hallmarks if you use our Jewelry Appraisals Online system as it will print on your certificate.
