Can You Authenticate 22k Gold?

February 4th, 2010

22k Gold Bracelet Question: I took my 22k gold bracelet to a jewlery store to have four links taken out to resize so that it would not fall of my wrist.

I waited in the store while they did the work. When the gave me back the bracelet it did not appear like the same bracelet. They said they cleaned it and that why.

Unfortunately the bracelet markings were never very distinguishable so the numerical mark are not clear being 916. Besides the official gold weight markings how can one authenticate 22k gold?

Answer: G'day Donna and many thanks for your query.

I hope the jeweler gave you back the 4 links they removed, as this is scrap gold and together with old earrings or broken rings can be sold or even meted down to make something new for you in years to come.

The 22ct gold quality mark as a decimal is 916 so that seems to be correct but to have the item tested means your local FRIENDLY jeweler will have to test it with Nitric Acid.

This is not as bad as it sounds as they usually do the test on a part of the item which is not easily seen, and with a clean and polish removes any visible marks.

You might like to get the item appraised as this will serve two purposes because not only will the appraiser do the above test, but you'll get a valuation price as well.

They will charge for the service but at least then you'll know.

You might also like to add this query to my blog at http://how2valuejewelry.com/ as other may have had a similar problem. Can't hurt anyway and who knows what answers you may get.

Hope this helps and it is interesting to note that the Jewelry Appraisals Online software will calculate jewelry in ALL gold qualities including 22 carat (karat). Isn't that nice... :-)

Jewelry hallmarks

Professional jewelry appraisals completed by gemologists and valuers often have to take into account the effect the jewelry hallmarks have on the value of each item being appraised.
