Jewelry hallmarks

Professional jewelry appraisals completed by gemologists and valuers often have to take into account the effect the jewelry hallmarks have on the value of each item being appraised. Do they alter the price, up or down, depending on the hallmark. The simple answer is yes – and no. It depends on the hallmarks themselves and where they come from.

I get similar questions on forums and ‘expert’ websites, together with my own members discussion group. They are usually in the following format, and in general the same questions get asked over and over again. They go… Continue reading Jewelry Hallmarks And What They Mean...

Most people when they imagine a pearl are picturing perfect large round spherical gems, creamy white in colour with a shimmery iridescent surface. The reality is that pearls are usually irregular in shape, each one is different and to find one that is completely round is almost unheard of, not to mention trying to make a whole necklace of pearls that are all more or less the same. Natural pearls are the rarest and most highly valued variety, but nowadays most pearl jewellery is made from cultured or farmed pearls, which are grown on pearl farms… Continue reading What are the Main Differences Between Freshwater and Saltwater Pearls?...

Name jewelry is one of the trendiest types of fashion accessory for both men and women. A large part of this modern upswing in popularity is due to the hip hop culture where large name jewelry items have become the defining fashion in bling. While much of the current fashion is large, bling-style pieces, name jewelry can range from delicate and subtle to big and bold. But name jewelry is also very popular as traditional mothers jewelry. Name rings and name necklaces are by far the most popular items with online stores and retailers… Continue reading Name Jewelry Trends...

What people are saying about this...

  1. I have my monther’s engagement and wedding rings which were given to me after she passed away. I didn’t believe they were worth a lot because the are silver and not gold. My parents got married in 1950, which means the rings had to have been purchased in 1949. A co-worker of mine told me that there was a different kind of substance used to make jewelry because precious metals were depleted after the end of WW I. Is that true? If my mother’s rings were made out of the that material, could that mean her rings could be worth more that I think?

Hi, I have a gold ring with what I believe are emeralds and opals on it, inside the band reads 18K HG and a S with a circle around it. I assume it means 18 karat but I don’t understand the HG and the S with the circle around it. Any idea what this means? Thanks!

Hi! I have a 10k gold ring that my father gave me when I was younger, and I was just wondering if you could give me any insight as to what the symbols on the inside of the band mean. There are two diamond shaped marks that sit right next to each other. One has the symbol |M| on the inside and seems to be etched in. The other has three dots, one in the upper corner and one each on the left and right. This symbol is punched in. Any ideas?

I was just given an old necklace that belonged to my grandmother. It is a string of artificial pearls with a silver pendant worked into the string. Inside the box lid, it has a gold crown with the words Navarre Indestructible Pearls. Can you tell me anything about the company and the approximate age of the necklace? Thanks.

  10. Geri Biscardi

Hello: I purchased what appears to be an Ivory carved cameo, from a flea market in Ventimiglia Italy three years ago. I would like to sell it. Paid 45 Euros for it at a table where an individual who appeared to be African or Indian was the owner. IT is Ivory, which is yellowing both on the front and reverse side. It has a carving that appears to have an orietal flavor, four figures wearing what looks like robes, but one is seated, beneath a carved out overhead hanging for shade. The carving has openings, (chipped out for depth look) and there is a theme around a tree that has roots revealed and leaves and flowers from bottom to top of the ivory. It is 1-1/2 to 1-3/4 inches in length, about 1-1/4 width, surrounded by what appears to be orange gold, hammered all around the edge of the ivory, and topped with a scrolling gold design, appears like beads, but it is gold scrolled work. It has a pin on the back, in good shape, tip clips beneath a C shaped clasp, and there i s a chain measureing about 2-1/2 inches long with a tiny safety pin at the end of it, which measures less then an inch in length. I would like to sell this. As I said, I believe this purchase was made in Europe, but I’ve other brooches and I’m not absolutely certain about the location of purchase. Do you know of any ivory orient-flavored cameos? I have searched for two days on E-bay and Internet sites for cameos, in Asian, Japanese, Chinese, and Antique-Vintage asian cameos without success.
    Thank you. Geri Biscardi
