Family Ring Stamped JF...

Question: Hello, I have just been given a ring passed down from Grandmother, to mother, to me.

Diamond Handbook: How To Look At Diamonds & Avoid Ripoffs (Newman Gem & Jewelry Series)

Price: $12.89

I know very little about jewelery but will try to describe it: large stone in center as if diamond, two small stones/chips? on either side also as if diamond, a third spot on either side of the smaller ones without any stones, just metal with a kind of flower indentation.

Inside the band (which is silver in color), are two markings: first appears to be a faded 12K (no promises on that one) and the second is JF (back to back, sharing the same 'stem' for the length of the letters).

Any idea as to its origin? Maker? Value? Can it be resized or cleaned up without causing damage?

Answer: G'day and many thanks for your query

You are going to have to take it to your local friendly jeweler for them to test the metal and identify the gemstones. Only then are you going to be able to say for sure if it can be resized safely.

The hallmarks could be anything as there is no central registry on world hallmarks. Basically it means that anyone - anywhere in the world, can make and stamp their jewelry.

While some countries are strict - others are not, and as you didn't mention where you live - or where your Grandmother lived and received the ring in the first place?

The JF could be a Store ID or Maker's Mark or the initials of the person who made it - no rules....

Before cleaning and resizing get your jeweler to look at it and if possible (if you have all the details) get the information recorded in our Jewelry Appraisals Online Database.

Hope this helps.

Jewelry hallmarks

Professional jewelry appraisals completed by gemologists and valuers often have to take into account the effect the jewelry hallmarks have on the value of each item being appraised. Do they alter the price, up or down, depending on the hallmark. The simple answer is yes – and no. It depends on the hallmarks themselves and where they come from.

I get similar questions on forums and ‘expert’ websites, together with my own members discussion group. They are usually in the following format, and in general the same questions get asked over and over again. They go… Continue reading Jewelry Hallmarks And What They Mean...

The Asscher cut diamond is unique that owes its name to Joseph Asscher the person that invented this particular stone way back in the year 1902. This diamond cut has as many as seventy-two facets and the diamond is shaped as a square though thanks to its parallel step facets as well as depth of corners it can be likened to an octagon as well. Sparkling Diamonds The true beauty of the Asscher cut diamond lays in the fact that such a cut helps make a diamond sparkle like no other diamond cut. Most people when they imagine a pearl are picturing perfect large round spherical gems, creamy white in colour with a shimmery iridescent surface. The reality is that pearls are usually irregular in shape, each one is different and to find one that is completely round is almost unheard of, not to mention trying to make a whole necklace of pearls that are all more or less the same. Natural pearls are the rarest and most highly valued variety, but nowadays most pearl jewellery is made from cultured or farmed pearls, which are grown on pearl farms… Continue reading What are the Main Differences Between Freshwater and Saltwater Pearls?...
