Diamond Price Calculations

Understanding How Diamond Prices Are Calculated:

Pricing most products is quite easy. Determine how much it costs to make the item, how much it costs to market that item, and then mark it up by 15 - 30% or more. Simple, right?

Well, pricing Diamonds isn't quite that simple.

There are many factors that are considered when Diamond Gems are priced.

Diamonds prices are determined first by adding the cost of the rough Gems, the cost of cutting the Diamond Gems, and all other costs necessary to turn the rough Diamonds into a marketable Gems.

Depending on the importance of the Diamonds, an independent company may be called in to certify the grade of the Diamond Gems based on colour, cut, clarity, and weight.

At this point, the Gems becomes more expensive each time it changes hands, until it finally reaches a retailer, where the price is raised a bit more.

Diamond GemstonesBefore reaching the retailer, however, the Diamond Gems must travel from the mine, to the cutter and polisher, to the independent grading company, and then to the Primary market.

Once it has reached the primary market, it will be purchased by Gems dealers and wholesalers, and from there it will be sold to retailers.

As you can see, the earlier you can purchase a Diamonds in the process, the lower the cost of the Diamond Gems will be - but not the value. The value is based on what the Diamonds will sell for in the market place - through a retailer.

If you own a Diamonds, and you have no idea how much it is worth, you can have it appraised, but the appraisal may not be accurate if you do NOT go to a qualified gemologist Valuer.

You will ALWAYS be better off obtaining a certificate through GIA - Gemological Institute of America - or from one of their equivalent associated members in the UK or Australia.

With the information on this certificate, you can use a cutter's guide to accurately determine what your Diamonds is worth.

There are also many Diamond Gems price calculators available. These can be found on the Internet, and many Diamond Gems dealers use these as well.

You must realize, however, that before you can accurately price a Diamond Gems, without a Gems Grade Report, you need to know quite a bit about Gems, such as different cuts, clarity, colour, and weight - and how each of those aspects adds to the value of a Gems, or decreases the value of the Gems as the case may be.

Again, you will be better off if you get a Diamond Gems Grading Report on the Gems, and use that information to look up the price in one of the guides that the Diamond Gems cutting industry uses. This will give you the most accurate value of the Diamonds in your possession, or of the Diamond Gems you are considering purchasing.

If you have that information already - from the retailers documents or eBay Sellers description or even an old out-of-date appraisal, you can get an online appraisal certificate here: please see Gemstone Appraisal Center

Jewelry hallmarks

Professional jewelry appraisals completed by gemologists and valuers often have to take into account the effect the jewelry hallmarks have on the value of each item being appraised. Do they alter the price, up or down, depending on the hallmark. The simple answer is yes – and no. It depends on the hallmarks themselves and where they come from.

I get similar questions on forums and ‘expert’ websites, together with my own members discussion group. They are usually in the following format, and in general the same questions get asked over and over again. They go… Continue reading Jewelry Hallmarks And What They Mean...

Most people when they imagine a pearl are picturing perfect large round spherical gems, creamy white in colour with a shimmery iridescent surface. The reality is that pearls are usually irregular in shape, each one is different and to find one that is completely round is almost unheard of, not to mention trying to make a whole necklace of pearls that are all more or less the same. Natural pearls are the rarest and most highly valued variety, but nowadays most pearl jewellery is made from cultured or farmed pearls, which are grown on pearl farms… Continue reading What are the Main Differences Between Freshwater and Saltwater Pearls?...

Name jewelry is one of the trendiest types of fashion accessory for both men and women. A large part of this modern upswing in popularity is due to the hip hop culture where large name jewelry items have become the defining fashion in bling. While much of the current fashion is large, bling-style pieces, name jewelry can range from delicate and subtle to big and bold. But name jewelry is also very popular as traditional mothers jewelry. Name rings and name necklaces are by far the most popular items with online stores and retailers… Continue reading Name Jewelry Trends...
